November: Yellow Wagtail scarf

The mornings have turned crisper, and we are rummaging for gloves and scarves before we leave for the school run, so what could be better to be knitting than a cosy cabled scarf?

This month's A Year of Techniques knitalong project is Sarah Hatton's snuggly warm cabled Yellow Wagtail scarf. This is just over 2 metres [84 inches] of squishy Shetland aran in garter stitch and cables - a perfect evening project for working in front of the fire (or TV). The technique we are focussing on is reading cables from charts. As usual there's a tutorial video over on Mason-Dixon Knitting, to help you along.

Sarah Hatton is well-known for her beautiful textured designs, so if you don't fancy the Yellow Wagtail scarf this month, according to Ravelry, she has nearly 200 other cabled patterns to choose from!

As with all our patterns, we have provided a choice of written or charted instructions, and many knitters find it helpful to get started on the written version, and then swap over to the charts once they are into the rhythm of the project. The aim this month is to help you to increase your confidence in working from charts, and to speed up your work as you have to use the chart key less. There are already lots of knitters over in our Ravelry group, chatting away about their Yellow Wagtails, and other beautiful cabled projects. It's going to be another great knitalong month!

If you haven't already cast on, then do grab some deliciously squishy Shetland Aran Worsted and join in! There are prizes as usual for some of the lucky knitalong participants who post photos to our KAL thread. Do head over there and find out more...

If you would like to treat yourself to the yarn for your Yellow Wagtail, you'll find a range of shades in our online shop, from the Auld Gold shown above, through Moss Green, Indigo, greys, reds and more. It's also the perfect moment to pick up a Winter Kit so that you have all the yarns you need for the final three projects (wow - I can't believe we are there already!!). We will be adding some alternative colourway options to the website later in the week, so if you don't fancy what's there, do let us know and we can set up some new combinations!

Happy knitting! And stay warm folks!
