It’s time to welcome the last of Autumn’s Confident Knitting patterns, the Findhorn Wrap by Emily K. Williams! This modern, striking stole gives us the chance to try out modular knitting, this month’s headline technique, and also contains a bonus tutorial for joining superwash or otherwise slick yarns.
If you already follow Emily K. Williams, you’ll know she’s a designer with a real eye for putting colours together, so I was thrilled when she proposed a fresh, geometric stole that would allow her colour sensibilities to shine! The result is the Findhorn Wrap, which takes its inspiration from the work of artist and weaver Anni Albers. I love how Emily has used bold, modularly knitted rectangles to echo the aesthetic of some of Albers’ famous woven works.
Modular knitting, at its most basic, means knitting small geometric shapes that ultimately combine to make a larger piece of knitted fabric. The joining can happen in many different ways. In the Findhorn Wrap, Emily makes clever use of yarn overs and two different joining strategies to seamlessly create a generous-sized wrap. As always, you’ll find video tutorials over on our YouTube channel, and in-depth photo tutorials in Confident Knitting.
The drama of the Findhorn Wrap is enhanced by the yarn Emily has used, Coop Knits Socks Yeah! 4ply, a light 4ply/fingering-weight yarn with lots of drape. We’ve put together two colourway options as part of our Confident Knitting Autumn Kit offerings that we think are pretty snazzy. But there is also lots of fun to be had by putting together your own colourway. We’ve got 35 heathered shades that range from the subtle to neon bright in the online shop. To achieve a mix of colours akin to the sample, you’ll need two balls each of two shades, and one ball each of three additional shades (so that’s five shades in total). Of course, there’s no reason you couldn’t use fewer or more colours in your own Findhorn Wrap… modular knitting lends itself to customisation!
We’ll be celebrating the Findhorn Wrap and modular knitting all month long over in The Knitalong Hub! We’re really excited to see your versions of this month’s pattern, and of course, as always, you’re welcome to join in with any project that makes use of this month’s featured technique. You can find everything you’ll need for this month’s project, including copies of Confident Knitting, yarn and seasonal kits in our CK online shop!
